Clean ECN for Your Immunotherapy Development
E. coli Nissle 1917 (ECN) is a nonpathogenic E. coli strain isolated in 1917 by Alfred Nissle and first used in the treatment of dysentery. It is the active ingredient in Mutaflor®, sold for decades in Europe, Canada, and East Asia as a probiotic for several gastrointestinal disorders, including diarrhea, uncomplicated diverticular disease, and ulcerative colitis. It is the only probiotic recommended by the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization as an alternate treatment to mesalazine for the maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis.
Recently, ECN has been embraced as a potential drug delivery vehicle for immunotherapeutics and is a promising candidate with probiotic properties for cancer treatment. Scarab Genomics has made targeted deletions in ECN with the goal of developing a safer probiotic and has removed numerous insertion sequences, transposable elements, and cryptic prophages from ECN. Are you embarking on studies to test ECN in a specific treatment modality? Why not start with Scarab’s clean ECN?
